The 2012 Inc. 5000 didn’t break out defense contractors separately, so I did. Here you go.
Despite the stagnant economy, the median growth rate of all 2012 Inc. 500|5000 companies remained an impressive 97 percent. The companies on this year’s list report having created over 400,000 jobs in the past three years, and aggregate revenue among the honorees reached $299 billion.
Here is how Inc. compiles their ranking:
The 2012 Inc. 500|5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth from 2008 through 2011. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2008.
Additionally, they had to be based in the United States, privately held, for profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2011. (Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.)
The minimum revenue required for 2008 is $100,000; the minimum for 2011 is $2 million.
One of this year’s honorees (not a defense contractor), is Z Squared Media, parent company of the Content Marketing Institute (CMI). According to CMI’s Joe Pulizzi, they attribute much of their success to content marketing:
To make it to this level, we almost exclusively used content marketing strategies and tactics to launch and grow the business, including starting with a blog platform and then expanding the strategy to white papers, print books, eBooks, e-newsletters, social media content, in-person events, and more.

Since a defense contractor’s website is one of its most important marketing assets, I ran each of the 2012 Inc. 500 / 5000 defense contractor websites through Marketing Grader. This free tool analyzes a website based on the 3 pillars of inbound marketing: 1) getting found online, 2) converting visitors to leads, and 3) measuring effectiveness.
Please note that Marketing Grader is a “tough grader.” A score in the 80′s is very good. And if your site’s score is currently low, there are a number of things that can be done to improve it in a relatively short period of time. In fact, when you run your own site through Marketing Grader, a comprehensive report is generated outlining how to improve your site’s marketing effectiveness.
One of the best things a defense contractor can do to improve their marketing effectiveness is to start a company blog. Here are two articles about the benefits of blogging for defense contractors:

Now, on to the list.
The list below is based on each company’s profile on the 2012 500 / 5000 Top Government Services Companies list. Companies were included here if their profile mentioned serving the Department of Defense. If you know of a defense contractor on the Inc. 500 list, but not listed below, please post a comment or contact me.
